KEEPING YOUR COMPUTER SECURE

Security is one of the most important things to have set up when it comes to your computers at work and at home. It is important because it enables you to protect your data from getting into the wrong people’s hands or being corrupted indefinitely. There is a lot of information that is stored on work computers and personal computers that could be used to steal identities and credit card information. A denial-of-service attack can happen by using ping commands. An attacker can use ping commands to overwhelm a computer leading it to eventually deny service and stop working. Phishing is a type of attack that uses fake tactics like emails and text messages to get personal information from someone with malicious intentions to steal money for example. A basic computer virus is any type of malware that attacks and spreads through computers normally accessing data and possibly losing it altogether. The National Cybersecurity Alliance points out that computer performance issues, missing files, or your computer constantly restarting can all be symptoms that you might have a computer virus. They also recommend that you do a full system scan on a regular basis to search for unwanted viruses with antivirus software, and to download software from the source and not a third-party while being careful on a public wifi network (The National Cybersecurity Alliance, 2023). It is also just a good rule of thumb to ensure you have the latest security updates on all your devices because security issues are normally found and require an update to keep it protected.
